Understanding Your Dog

Filed under: pets — link at 8:30 am on Monday, June 18, 2007

Dogs are animals and inherently live instinctively. Most often, we just expect more from them. Dogs react to their surroundings while we tend to over react to it. Before we worry that our pooch is a nuisance barker, read how your concern may be just a simple human-dog misunderstanding.

Is your dog just too anxious and jumpy at a certain times of the day?
Try to recall or find what significance that certain time has in your household.
Tiny my Mom’s dog has a barking fit at 3pm. apparently during summer my brother unwittingly established a playtime with Tiny. Like a normal teenager, all activity depends on his mood (read as: when not asleep!) My mom solved the problem by having playtime with her pet when my brother wasn’t in the mood.

Does your dog go bonkers after neighbor’s female dog passes by?
Yeah it’s because she’s female…but it’s not love at first sight. A female dog’s menstruation cycle happens every 6 months and lasts 21 days (more or less). The best way to keep sane is for you to catch his attention with food or an activity. Or maybe ask if your neighbor can pass on the sidewalk across your home (good luck!).

Your dog is suddenly inactive…
Unless you just sent his favorite family member off to college or his mate died, (which by the way is a valid) the problem may probably be physical health. Look for tell tale signs of sickness. If there is, go to your vet.

He annoys by letting you know its walk time, with leash in mouth…
Come on, he doesn’t understand you’ve got that deadline. Your pooch doesn’t even know what being “fired” is. Your dog only focuses on the time YOU set for a walk.

Rely on your own observation and insight. Studies show that dogs are largely affected by their surroundings. Only when all simple remedies fail, it is when you can consult an expert.

After sharing wonderful moments with your pet when he was still younger, you will dump him now that his old or disabled? That’s inhumane!

And at the end of the day you feel blessed and pleased that with your extra care and little consideration, you were able to brighten up the life of an old or disabled pet.

Dog Beds

Filed under: pets — link at 1:18 pm on Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Dogs have lived with and worked with humans in so many roles that their loyalty and devotion has earned them our love and friendship. Sometimes man’s bestfriend just want a warm and safe place to curl up and nap. And don’t they deserve it?
Different kinds of dog beds are now available in the market today. They come in all sizes, shapes, colors and materials. Certainly, you have a lot of options: big, small, round, rectangular, colored, patterned, custom and even luxury and designer dog beds. It is up to you to choose the best dog bed that fits the size and needs of your dog. Just always consider the comfort of your dog just as you would if you are buying bed for yourself.

The first thing to consider in choosing a dog bed is the size. Large dogs obviously need large dog beds. You also have to consider where your dog prefers to sleep. If he/she prefers to sleep on the floor then hard dog bed is just right. If he/she prefers to sleep on the sofa then he/she needs a soft dog bed. You should also decide on the right shape for the dog bed.  Dogs that like curling up should have a curved dog bed while dogs that like better spreading out deserves a rectangular dog bed. If the dog desires to be above the floor, consider a raised dog bed. Special orthopedic beds are also available for old, arthritic and ill dogs and heated dog beds that keep the dog warm and comfy for those winter seasons. Over time, dog beds wear out and bed padding thins. Make sure you get a material that can withstand at least a decent amount of time.
Whichever dog bed you choose for your dog, the most important thing is that you choose a dog bed that confirms to the latest health and safety standards. Don’t compromise the comfort of your dog for cheaper priced dog beds. Also see to it that you choose a dog bed that is fully washable or at least has a removable washable cover to keep your dog’s bed fresh and clean.

Pet Food Poisoning

Filed under: pets — link at 8:11 am on Friday, April 6, 2007

The recent pet-food poisoning incidents are really very alarming and distressing. I believe that pet food makers are largely to blame for they carry the sole responsibility of enforcing quality control over their products and ensuring the safety level of their merchandise. But now they have broken our trust and even cost us considerable financial costs and emotional stress. Pets are part of the family, sometimes even valued more than actual family members, and it is very heartbreaking to see them weak, sickly, and being fed thru a tube. Worse, the death of a beloved pet can be truly devastating and could become a difficult thing to accept, knowing that it could have been avoided early on in the first place.

We all know that table/people food isn’t very healthy for our pets, which is why we give them these specially-processed food to meet their nutritional needs. But since the poisoning incidents, I believe that pet food sales will definitely see a decline. Who can pet owners trust now, knowing that slip-ups like these can be made even by major pet food manufacturers like Menu? Right now, I’m leaning towards just feeding my dogs homemade meals from scratch. Sure, these meals might be less nutritious, but at least I can be sure they are clean and 100% safe to eat.

Dogs Can Be Hero’s

Filed under: pets — link at 9:22 am on Wednesday, April 4, 2007

“Chief” a pitt bull terrier has been a trained canine, bringing honor and glory to its owners winning various awards and recognitions in dog shows. His obedient demeanor and behaved character, won him praises.Despite his breed being unfairly categorize by some as wildly fierce, he is known to be a defender of his masters and his loyalty was proven till the end, sadly.

One ordinary day turned into a tragedy when Maria Victoria Fontreras, a homemaker and her 89 year old mother where having their nap in their suburban home one peaceful weekend with Chief resting in the kitchen area after a hearty lunch, suddenly out of nowhere a long deadly black king cobra wickedly slithered its way inside the house through a crack in the wall and headed into the living room area where the lady’s where.

Chief sprang into action without thinking of his own safety sensing danger for his lady masters with an intruder lurking in his territory. The snake was about to attack the unsuspecting women when Chief took cover and battled the evil snake, its venom was too much for Chief but he still struggled to fight it out, immobilized and shocked at the sudden scene Victoria struggled to pull his mother out of harms way.

Chief´s heroism brought collective unity to a city comprising of Christians and Muslims who were touched by his bravery. An award was given to him posthumously at the City Town Hall recognizing his heroic acts for saving human lives.

Indeed Chief is a guardian angel, so are the rest of our lovable pets who bring us cheer and hope for a better world.

My dog received many presents this year.  As luck would have it, she is already chewed up half of them.  However, it seems she was really enjoying them at the time.  Santa brought her a squeaky frog, a tire and rope tug-of-war toy, and lots of bones and treats.

We hope we will continue to be prosperous in the year ahead and we wish you all the very best.

Dog Sense

Filed under: pets — link at 9:26 am on Wednesday, November 1, 2006

Dogs have amazing senses. Everyone knows that a dog’s sense of smell and sight is much better than the average person. Most people probably do not know that dogs have another amazing sense in which they can sense a chemical change in a human’s body. If you have an animal, such as a dog, you will notice that when you are not feeling well they tend to stick by your side more than usual. There are women that believe their dogs can sense elevated hormones in their bodies.

I heard a story once about a dog that saved his owner’s life. The story was about a man who had epilepsy. His canine companion was highly trained. As his companion the dog never left the man’s side. His dog was trained to make notice of a heightened chemical change in the man’s body. One day they were on the train on the way into the man’s work. His dog started barking at him and kept getting louder and louder. Normally when this happened he would just get to place where he could lie down and he would be safe, but he noticed the dog was acting much more anxious than normal. He immediately went to the hospital. The man had a Grand Maul Seizure that day. The doctors believe that he would have died if he were not at the hospital during the seizure. The man’s dog was his hero and saved his life.

This is just one example of how dogs are heroes. You hear stories everyday about rescue dogs and how they save people’s lives. Animals live by instincts and most of the time they follow their instincts. People would be better off if they followed their instincts more often.
